ABOUT THE CHALLENGE
The Senior All Star Challenge began in 2003. The first all star games for graduating
seniors was held at the University of Washington softball diamond between the graduating
seniors from the Kingco 3A and Kingco 4A. It was intended to be low key and was
somewhat of an experiment to see if it would work. It was everything that was expected and
more as the day was sunny and the players had the time of their lives. Two games were played
and each team won a game.
In 2004 the event was expanded to include four teams from fourteen leagues. The teams were
made up of the following leagues: 1. Wesco North, Wesco South, and the Northwest league 2. Kingco 3A,
Kingco 4A, and Metro 3A. 3. SPSL North, SPSL South, and Seamount King.4. Narrows Bay, Narrows
Bridge, Seamount Pierce, and Pac 9. Each team had a coordinator whose job it was to put together
the team from the all league selechttps://p3slhsccweb.secureserver.net/filemanager/31ad214e-e079-4a0b-87eb-dd72a9916fa3tions. Tom Rizzuto, Shorewood High School, Mike Eckhart,
Sammamish(now at Enumclaw) High School, Greg Kaas, Kentlake High School, and Bruce Welling, Central
Kitsap High School have been coordinators since 2004. All four of these individuals have been
instrumental in the development of this all star event. Risan Athletics
became a key sponsor in 2003. The Senior All Star Challenge remained much the same
through 2007.
In 2008 the Senior All Star Challenge became an all state fastpitch event. All of the forty
seven leagues making up the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association(WIAA) were included.
Jeff Skelly, Inglemoor High School, Steve Taylor, Battle Ground High School, George Lynn, Shadle
Park High School, and Paul Antonovich, Pasco High School were added as team coordinators. Long time
Mt. Si coach, Larry White was added as a coordinator for 2009. The
Washington State Coaches Association became a welcome
key sponsor as did Cloud 9 Sports and Baden.
With their continued help, the Senior All Star Challenge may develop one all state team that competes
against other all state teams.
The 2010 Challenge became even stronger with the addition of major softball equipment manufacturer,
Combat Sports designing and making
custom game uniforms for each player. These uniforms will be given to each participant in the 2011 challenge as a
souvenir of their selection to the Senior All Star Challenge. Combat senior vice president Don Cooper
has been a long time softball player, supporter, and team sponsor. Combat Sports is currently a
major sponsor of the PFX Profastpich X-Treme Tour
As the 2011 Challenge approaches, the purpose of these games remains unchanged:
To provide an opportunity for the top high school graduating fastpitch players in the state of
Washington to play against other top graduating seniors. The event is intended to be fun yet competitive
and to celebrate their outstanding high school careers.
